Always Learning Statistics
I launched the Always Learning Web site in my office at
Virginia Tech in September 1994 using a
PowerMac 7100 running MacHTTP.
In those ancient times I used WebStat to generate summary statistics from the server logs. In
May 1996, I moved the site to a 120 MHz Pentium computer running O'Reilly
Associates' WebSite server software under Windows NT Server.
Beginning in January 1997, I used WebTrends
to generate reports. On July 22,
1997, I changed the Web server software to Microsoft Internet Information Server. On
April 27, 2000, I upgraded the server hardware to a 450 MHz Pentium III running Windows
2000 Server and Internet Information Server. On June 8, 2005, I upgraded the
hardware again to a 1.8 GHz Pentium 4.
Summary
monthly statistics for some months may not be available due to various experiments with
different server log formats. Due to an unfortunate bug in WebTrends, time of
day in reports generated since the middle of 1999 through the end of 2002 are listed as occurring 4 to 5 hours earlier
than the actual events, depending on whether the time was EST or EDT.
Disappointingly, Web Trends does not provide fixes for obvious bugs that they
introduce into their software between versions unless you pay them more money.
However, beginning with February 2003, I obtained a newer version of Web Trends
that compensates for the time difference between local time and GMT.
