FREE AGENT

Comment: To read internet news, you need access to an NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) server. Most Internet Service Providers will include access to a news server. Free Agent can be used for both online and offline newsreading. Offline reading can save connection fees.

Fee: Free Agent is free. As an upgrade to Free Agent, Forte sells Agent, which has numerous features useful to those who read a lot of news. Note that the commercial version is also available as a download, but it requires a registration key to make it functional. You are given a registration key when you pay for Agent. Free Agent should satisfy the needs of most people.

These files are best obtained from Forte's Free Agent Newsreader page.

Installation:

  1. Copy the downloaded file to a temporary directory, for instance, C:\INSTALL.
  2. Run the installation program by double-clicking the downloaded file.
  3. Launch Free Agent.
  4. Supply the requested information. Free Agent can read the configuration files of other popular news readers to speed the installation process if you are upgrading from a different news reader.
